Servius's daughter, Tullia, married the son or grandson of Tarquinius Priscus, Lucius Tarquinius. c. 530 BC. After a series of murders, Tarquinius seized the monarchy from Servius, and Servius was killed by Tarquinius's henchmen. There is a story that Tullia drove in a carriage over the dead body of her father. Servius reigned for forty-four years. Tarquinus (now surnamed Superbus) ruled by means of terror, executing those senators that had supported Servius. He started trying capital cases without consultation. He appointed senators of his own choice, and sought to govern without consultation with the Senate. He started punishing his opponents by condemning them to death by drowning with a weight tied around them. As a war leader he had some accomplishments - starting the war with the Voscians and taking the town of Gabii by a stratagem in which his youngest son pretend to be a defector. He made a peace treaty with the Aequians and also with Etruria. He started the building of the temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline, requiring freemen to labour in this enterprise just as if they were slaves.
