Instead of grad phi we can use the expression nabla phi. The symbol [nabla] is pronounced del or nabla and it stands for [Equation goes here - download the original to see it.] It signifies the operation of finding the first-order partial derivatives of nabla and the formation of a vector field. Nabla is not itself a vector, but by applying nabla to a scalar field a vector field is defined; hence it is called a differential vector operator
