Formal/informal communication

Equations are omitted for technical reasons - download the original pdf

Communication can be formal and informal. However, formal communication does not mean written communication. For example, a verbal reprimand from a manager to a subordinate is a form of formal communication, whereas a written joke passed around the office is a form of informal communication. The purposes of informal communication are (1) to satisfy personal needs; (2) to prevent boredom; (3) to provide information relevant to the job that is not provided by formal channels.
